XBMC legacy performed admirably for local file playback — it's still a capable media player — but struggled with modern stream protocols and required workarounds that modern alternatives handle natively.

There's no universal winner here — and that's actually the point. The open-source media center ecosystem is healthy enough in 2024 that you can find the right tool for your specific situation rather than settling for a one-size-fits-all solution.
